Phuket Budget Guide
How to experience the best of Phuket on $30-50 per day — hostels, street food, free activities, and money-saving hacks
Phuket has a reputation as Thailand's most expensive island, but budget travel here is absolutely possible. With hostel dorms from 250 THB/night, street food dishes from 40-80 THB, and dozens of free beaches, temples, and viewpoints, you can explore Phuket on $30-50 per day (1,000-1,700 THB) without missing the highlights.
The key is avoiding tourist traps: skip overpriced tuk-tuks, eat where locals eat, and book tours through local agencies instead of hotel desks. This guide breaks down exactly how.
Daily Budget Breakdown
Budget Accommodation
Hostel Dorms
250-400 THB/night
Phuket Town and Patong have the most hostels. Look for places with free breakfast, lockers, and social common areas. The Dorm Hostel in Phuket Town and Lub d Patong are solid options. Book on Hostelworld or Agoda for best rates.
Guesthouses
500-800 THB/night
Private rooms in family-run guesthouses. Usually include fan or AC, private bathroom, and sometimes breakfast. Found throughout Phuket Town, Kata, and the quieter side streets of Patong. Great for couples on a budget.

- Night markets are gold. Chillva Market, Old Town Sunday Walking Street, and Malin Plaza near Patong serve dishes from 40 THB.
- Drink water from 7-Eleven. Large bottles cost 10-15 THB. Avoid tourist restaurant water at 40-80 THB.
- Skip Bangla Road restaurants. Tourist restaurants on Patong's main strip charge 200-500 THB for the same dishes that cost 60-100 THB one block away.
- Choose hostels with free breakfast. This saves 50-100 THB per morning.
Free Things to Do in Phuket
Beaches
Every beach in Phuket is free. Patong, Kata, Karon, Nai Harn, Freedom Beach (via jungle trail), and dozens more. Bring your own towel and water to avoid chair rental fees (200 THB).
Big Buddha
Phuket's 45-meter marble Buddha statue is free to visit. The hilltop location offers 360-degree views of the island. Modest clothing required (free sarongs available at entrance).
Old Town Phuket
Wander the colorful Sino-Portuguese streets, admire the architecture, visit Chinese shrines, and explore Thalang Road. Free to walk around and photograph. Sunday Walking Street market runs from 4-10 PM.
Viewpoints
Karon Viewpoint (three-bay panorama), Promthep Cape (famous sunset spot), Windmill Viewpoint, and Rang Hill are all completely free. Arrive at Promthep 30 minutes before sunset.
Temples
Wat Chalong (Phuket's most important temple), Wat Phra Thong, and smaller neighborhood temples are free to enter. Small donations of 20-50 THB are appreciated but not required.
Night Markets
Free to browse and people-watch. The Old Town Sunday Walking Street, Chillva Market (Thu-Sat), and Naka Weekend Market are vibrant evening experiences even without buying.
Budget Transport Tips
Songthaews (30-40 THB)
Shared minibuses running between Phuket Town and the main beaches. The cheapest transport option. Routes cover Phuket Town to Patong, Kata, Karon, and Rawai. They run from early morning until about 5-6 PM. Flag them down on the main road.
Phuket Smart Bus (100-170 THB)
Air-conditioned bus running along the west coast from the airport to Rawai. Stops at major beaches including Surin, Kamala, Patong, Karon, and Kata. Runs every 30-60 minutes. Cheaper than Grab for long distances.
Grab (100-400 THB)
Ride-hailing app with transparent pricing. More expensive than songthaews but much cheaper than tuk-tuks. Split with fellow travelers to reduce costs. Grab bikes are even cheaper (50-150 THB for short trips).
Tuk-Tuks (300-600 THB)
Phuket tuk-tuks are notoriously overpriced and do not use meters. A short ride that costs 100 THB on Grab will cost 300-400 THB by tuk-tuk. Only use if no other option is available, and always negotiate the price before getting in.
